Etsy Interview with BluHour

Etsy Interview with BluHour

First off, tell me a little bit about yourself. My name is Brooke Scott and I started BluHour Jewelry in November of 2009. I spent several years in Seattle, Washington and recently moved back to my hometown of Portland Oregon with my husband Kris and my super silly mini Dachshund Gus.

Things you should know about me:

I love wandering for hours through antique stores my parents drug me to them nearly every weekend as a kid and it kind of stuck. I am a total pack rat

I am obsessed with all things Italian especially the food and am aching to go back ASAP.

A new pair of shoes is one of lifes greatest pleasures.

How and when did you start making jewelry and your other items?

Wow! For as long as I can remember.

One of my earliest memories of selling jewelry is when I was a kid and my best friend and I would load up the station wagon and set up a folding table at the local outdoor market. I think we sold like 2 pieces all day : But I was hooked!

When and how did you originally find Etsy?

A friend told me about Etsy last year and from the moment I clicked on those orange and white letters, I knew I had found something big. Thanks to Etsy, people like me can turn their passion and creativity into a business that can reach a worldwide audience. Truly amazing.

What is unique about Etsy and what about the website do you like the most in regards to your shop?

I love that Etsy is so user friendly. It is a breeze to navigate and search.

Also, there is such an emphasis on creativity. The sellers take such care to list photos and descriptions that are creative and appealing not just functional like other marketplace websites. Etsy is so addictive! I can easily spend hours cruising through the pages and I cant think of another website that I would do that with.

What inspires you the most in regards to your creations?

I love the idea that a great piece of jewelry can completely elevate a pair of jeans and a t shirt into something extraordinary! I am truly inspired by the quality and elaborate details found in vintage jewelry. I am constantly trying to find that perfect fusion where something classic and simple can become fresh and different through design.

What is your favorite piece youve created and why?

My favorite piece in BluHour is the SIlver Bow Necklace. One evening, I was leafing through a fashion magazine, when i came upon a perfectly tied bow. It hit me like a bolt of lightning that it could look amazing translated into a necklace if I could figure out how to bend one continuous piece of wire into a bow shape. After many attempts, I got it right and the Silver Bow Necklace was born. I just added the Tiny Bow Necklace to my lineup too!. It continues to be my best seller and is popular with brides all over the world. Who would have thought??!!

What do you want to accomplish with your online shop?

The ultimate dream would be to do BluHour full time. I would love to see it grow. I cant imagine how wonderful it would be to create jewelry all day, everyday. I sure wouldnt miss the hour and a half commute each day, either!

Do you have any new creations in the works? If so, what can shoppers expect to see from you soon?

I am really excited about some vintage map pendants I have been working on. I have a growing collection of vintage maps from the 1930s and 1950s and I love the idea of carrying a favorite place with you. Maybe its where you grew up or your favorite place to visit. The best part is that they are totally customizable.

I have also been working on some resin pieces using vintage optical lenses. I use a lot of victorian postcards in my work and it is amazing to read the sentiments on the back from long ago. The artwork is exquisite and I love the idea that those images will live on a new form. We can design something together!
